 Hi!

I was given a last-minute task to transpose a complicated old Australian hymn into another key so that it would work for a different singer. My question is, can I enter everything from the original score as it is and then transpose it into any key that I would like? I know that Concert Key works for writing a song and transposing it for another instrument, by choosing that instrument at setup and choosing a concert key, plus selecting the Display in Concert Key tool.

Is this possible?

 

OS: macOS Sierra, version 10.12.4; Finale 2014.5.7098

I do this a lot.  Don't bother about Concert Pitch.  Just enter it in the key in the hymnal you are copying from, then use the key signature tool to Change to the key you want.  Just be sure to choose from measure 1 to end of piece, and also choose whether you want to transpose up or down.

I have a big problem. I have transposed a score of Die Fledermaus written for F Trumpet, up a 5th for  Bb trumpet, but it is not a good transposition because the Bs do not transpose to F#, just to F! Why is that? I'm worried now that the trumpeters will find that other notes are not perfectly transposed. Is it because under Utilities/Transpose.. it gives me only a choice of "5th," not "Perfect 5th"? Help!!

I'm not much on transposing instruments, but what happens if you set up a new staff for Horn in F, and drag your notes into that?

Horn in F sounds a perfect fifth BELOW where written. Trumpet in F sounded a perfect fourth ABOVE. (So if the Horns and Trumpets were written in unison, they sounded in octaves.)

So what is the problem? The octaves? That's easy to change.

 

(I'm not arguing or disputing; as I said, I don't understand transposing instruments. I'm just trying to wrap my head around the issue.)

 

Can you post a picture of what you have, and another of what you need?
