I have an orchestra score with English Horn.  in its transposed staff, the instrument is supposed to play down to C.  I cannot get it to playback below F.  Hoping someone will advise.

We need more info:

What Finale version? - v25? - 2014.5? - 2014? - 2012?

What OS? - and version?

What playback device are you using?

Does the playback problem happen during note entry? - or when you click the Playback button?

Mac Finale v25.5.0.259  iMac (Retina  5k,27-inch, Mid 2015) 3.3 Ghz Intel Core i5

Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.2

I use the playback window of Finale and the internal speakers of my Mac.

Notes will not sound below the 'F'.  I just now experimented by moving an eighth note in the English Horn part up and down and there were playback sounds on all except notes below the 'F'.

I can hear the E.H. part in context with the other instruments EXCEPT for those few notes that fall below that range.  I notice that Finale changes the color of a note [to yellow/orange] when you exceed the range of the instrument.  This happens at the 'B' below the staff for the E.H.  All other instruments [in my Woodwind Quintet] will produce sounds until I reach the lower limit of its range [when the notepad changes color].  ONLY the E.H. is different in this regard.

Thank you for your attention and help!

1) When I asked “What playback device are you using?”, I meant:

Take a look in the MIDI/Audio menu.

What is selected at the top?

“Play Finale Through Audio Units”

or

“Play Finale Through MIDI”

?

2) Does the playback problem happen during note entry? - or when you click the Playback button? (or both?)

3) Since you are using Finale v25.5, take a look in

MIDI/Audio menu > Device Setup

Is the option “Transpose MIDI On Input” selected or de-selected?

Finale's MIDI/SoftSynth sounds are (in my experience) not range-limited.

Directed to Peter Thomsen;

1. 'Play Finale through Audio Units.  I toggled back to Play Finale and regained the lost pitches but lost the Garritan sounds.  I then hit the device set up to play midi through and seemed to retain both when I switched back to 'Play Finale through Audio Units.

2] Both

3] It did not seem to make a difference whether 'transpose midi was selected or not [after I did the first step.  I left it selected.

I would have to say you have found my source of ignorance Peter.  I do not understand the relationship of Finale and MIDI set up.  In my 20 plus years of using Finale, I had never made use of Garritan Instruments and THAT must be the source of all my issues.

I sincerely thank you for your help Peter.  If you have any direction for me as to understanding the Finale/MIDI relationship, please feel free to send me to a source of information.  I plead total ignorance as I am a simple guitarist- but capable of learning!

All the Best!  Billy

William Stewart,

You wrote:

“… regained the lost pitches but lost the Garritan sounds …”

Which Garritan sounds?

Are you talking about the sounds that came with Finale (= Garritan Instruments for Finale)?

Or have you perhaps purchased additional Garritan sounds?

Garritan Personal Orchestra 5.  It came bundled with Finale 25.

Thank you for your help!

… Garritan Personal Orchestra 5.  It came bundled with Finale 25 …

1) What happens if you instead of GPO 5 try Garritan Instruments for Finale?

(This is not a solution, but rather a test, to narrow down the culprit)

2) Have you tried the command Reassign Playback Sounds?

(MIDI/Audio menu > Reassign Playback Sounds)

Peter,

The problem disappeared after trying different MIDI settings [as I described previously].  I'm sorry, I thought I made that clear.  As to what  the specific culprit was,  I a not motivated to seek that answer.  Too old and too much to do.  Thank you very much for your aid!
