Mac OS 10.12.5, using Finale 25

I am trying to print octavo-sized choral music on 8.5x11 paper. I've always checked the "crop marks" box on the print screen, which centered the music on the paper and printed the appropriate crop marks. I just started using Finale 25 and now the music is printed too high on the page (the bottom margin is bigger than the top) and there are no crop marks. What can I do? Thanks!

I always checked the "crop marks" box, as I indicated in my post. That centered the octavo-sized page on the letter-size page and put the registration marks where they needed to be. In Finale 25, however, this doesn't work.

Well, the reason I posted the link is because it wasn't clear how you got to that point.

I think I know the solution. Check the box for Fit to Page. The crop marks will be off the paper if you don't.

Thanks, Mike, "fit to page" works, but shrinks the page down too far. I'd like to see the octavo size page at 100%. What's weird is that I've been printing this way since Finale 2006 and it's only since I started using Finale 25 that it's gone wrong.

As you've probably noticed, print to .pdf from that print screen is not true black, unlike previous versions. If that's ok, I have a workaround involving Preview..

For true black pdf files, you need to go to the Graphics menu and Export Pages... (this was in 2014 but fw used it). Unfortunately, crop and registration marks are not available so the Preview workaround won't.

Hey, Mike, I like the Preview workaround! I'm aware of the "true black" problem and deal with that by exporting eps files into Quark. As far as I know, Finale has never had true black pdfs (this was a rude awakening when I started engraving about 10 years ago). I'm just wondering why I've been centering octavo pages all this time and now suddenly can't. Oh well...thanks so much for your help and insights!

Actually, using Graphics/Export pages... does get you true black. The files are much smaller by 2/3 or more. Still no crop marks, though.

Anyway, I'd send this one to MM Support using the Submit a request link at the top of the page. If there's something that we're missing or a bug that needs to be fixed...

Yep, I did that. Oddly enough, I just printed some files that worked just fine...centered and with the crop marks. The files that didn't work came from other computers. Hmmmm.

A clue?

25.4 was released today and claims some improvements. I don't know if you will notice the difference.

Printing

  • 4-up printing with registration marks and/or crop marks flushes each page with each other and centers them vertically.
  • N-up printing results in centered output, no matter the scaling factor applied.

Thanks for the tip, Mike! I'll look into it.
