Scoured documentation, read up on keyswitches, I see that "pizz" turns violins into pizzicato but it doesn't say how to do it, much less how to add vibrato. I'm not good at Finale and the documentation I think assumes some level of knowledge I do have. A step by step would be nice but I can't find it. How do I make violins get vibrato, and remove it after a few measures?

pizz. works through Human Playback (which has different settings via the MIDI/Audio menu).

Vibrato would have to be controlled via settings in the Aria player via the Controls tab if it is available for an instrument at all.

Other, third-party sounds may have their own means of controlling vibrato (a difficult parameter, since it must usually be compatible with the tempo of the music--or turned on and off entirely, as you desire).

In any case (IIRC) you would have to set up your own expressions/HP settings to control vibrato dynamically.

Just to make things clear:

There are different types of vibrato, presenting different technical difficulties in computer playback, with different playback devices.

Playback with softsynth is one beast. Playback with recorded sound samples is a quite different beast.

Vibrato on string instruments is a pitch vibration. This type of vibration “softens” the experience of “out-of-tune” harmony.

Vibrato on a Vibraphone, On The Other Hand, is a timbre vibration.

A third type is loudness vibration. This type is technically easier to do, but it is not a satisfactory replacement for pitch vibration.

First, what sounds are you using for playback? I'm guessing Garritan, either the included sounds with Finale or perhaps the full version of GPO. AT least with GPO 4, there is no way to control vibrato in the string sections. All you get is what was recorded in the samples. On page 158 of the GPO manual, CC#17 controls vibrato on specific solo woodwind and brass instruments. You can identify which patches these are by the NV in their name.

To have vibrato control on strings or other instruments you'd have to purchase a 3rd party sample library which included vibrato control.

In case you are looking for Pizzicato, I think this is another way to obtain it.
in Finale, click...Window menu, Score Manager.
CTRL K is shortcut. then click add instrument,

should let you select it.
Here is a screen shot of the Pizzicato sound bank in Finale's Smart Music Soft Synth. I found this post because I was searching for.... within "plucked strings", pizzicato.
