I have a score going to publishing and I need to hide the left hand staff for many systems. How is this optimizing done?

If I understand you correctly, you have tried to hide the lower staff of a Grand Staff - right?
And you can not make it happen, in spite of numerous attempts - right?
(You have probably tried
Staff menu > Hide Empty Staves)
My first guess would be that you should take a good look at the Group Attributes for the Staff Group.
In the pop up menu {When Hiding Empty Staves}, what menu item is chosen?
