Finale V 25.3 Mac OS Sierra - I have been scoring a song for three vocal parts.  Everything has been going fine until I made it to page 3.
One measure is taking up the space of a whole staff system at the end of the page.  I went to Page Layout & shortened the measure.
Then, I went to the Measure Tool & added measures.  It does not add the measure next to the shortened measure.  It puts them on the next page.  I tried Adding a Measure Stack.  Same result.  I tried Insert.  Same result.

I don't want one, big, long measure at the bottom of the page while the systems above it have 3 measures each.  It's as if Finale thought the piece ended there for some reason.

I've taken a screenshot of the pages, but it is apparently too big to send.  Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum!

… I went to Page Layout & shortened the measure …

This is a misunderstanding of how Finale works.

In “Finale-speak” there are Measures, and there are Systems.

You can see Measures in both Scroll View and Page View.

But you must switch to Page View before you can see any Systems.

Systems are “a layout thing” - a System is one “music line” in the layout.

Finale will fit as many Measures in each System as it can.

As more Measures are added, Finale will fill the last System with Measures, and create new Systems as needed, to make room for the added measures.

The new Systems will be created with the formatting settings you can find here:

Document menu > Page Format > Score…

You can customize the settings in {Page Format for Score}.

When you have changed the settings, all new Systems will be formatted with the new settings - already existing Systems are not affected.

NB: Adding more Measures will not affect the margins in a System (= Finale will not make the System neither wider nor shorter)

When you “went to Page Layout & shortened the measure”, you actually shortened the System.

Since there was only one Measure in the System, the “System shortening” also shortened the Measure.

  1. You can click a measure and use the up or down arrows to move it respectively to the former or next system.
  2. By right-clicking in a measure, you can use the percent tool to change the size of a page of music, a system of music, or a staff of music.
  3. In Document Options > Music Spacing > Spacing Widths you can alter the spacing between notes.

Somewhere in there you should be able to find a way to squeeze your system-wide measure back onto the former line if that is what you wish.
