I looked at older posts and got lost.  One post mentioned MIDI/Audio and I took a risk.  Here's what I did:
1. Click on MIDI/Audio
2. At the top of the drop down:  Is it "Play Finale through VST" or "Play Finale through MIDI"
3. If VST is checked, change it to MIDI
4. Then try your playback.
5. My sound is great now!

Currently, I cannot find a way to set this as the default setting

Solution to Scratchy:   MIDI/Audio > Play Finale through MIDI
This takes care of it for that piece.  Use this with everything if you do not use VST (or have any idea what it is or how to use it!!).

The VST sounds, along with effects processing that may be set in the VST can require a larger audio buffer setting (I use 1024) to play smoothly. The Devices and Effects sliders can also allow one to set volumes that cause clipping (as shown by the clipping light on the panel).

Besides what Adrian just mentioned, each instance of the Aria engine uses only one core. Using multiple instances allows the OS to balance the instances among the cores. Depending on your instruments, this may or may not be an issue for you.
