Finale 27.3.0.137
Windows 11 Pro v. 22H2
12th Gen Intel Core (TM) i9-12900K   3.20 GHz
128 GB RAM
64-bit operating system

This happens often enough to be beyond frustrating. I will be working along and then, at some point, when I select something from the Simple Entry palette, I get the “Finale has encountered an error and will shut down” message. When it re-opens and recovers the file, it continues shutting down every time I go to select anything from the Simple Entry palette. The only “fix” I’ve found is to rename or delete the FINALE.INI and FINMIDI.INI files and then re-open Finale—which works—but then I have to go back in and reconfigure all my preferences again. And even then, it will work for a time before the same thing eventually happens again, sending me into that frustrating loop. I’m tearing my hair out. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Does the message give you any clue as to what this error might be?

Reinstall and reboot. If that does not take care of it, you can use the Submit a request link at the top of the page to send it to MakeMusic Support.

Hello. Thanks for the response. It does not give any clue about what causes the error. For the moment I've discovered that if I let Finale recover the file--and then shut the program down properly and re-open it--that fixes it--for a while...most of the time.

When I am finished with the project I'm currently working on I will try the re-install. Watch this space. :-)

Pretty sure that each time Finale meets a new user, it decides on a short list of things it doesn't like that user to do, and once in a while, it will quit when the user tries to do those things.  That "encountered an error" message is what appears in those instances.   It also remembers these things after you update or upgrade, or install on a brand new computer.

For me, it's Score Manager, Manage Parts, and stopping playback with the mouse.

Side effects may include protracted yelling, intermittent deskpound, and increased use of alcohol.  Do not use Finale while operating heavy machinery.  Do not use Finale if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, or if you are really near a deadline.

The cause is simple the reason for it is not. You have a conflict somewhere. I am running nearly the same machine as you and I never experience any shut down. The first basic thing to do is update all your computers drivers. Even though you may have a new machine the drivers may not be the latest. You can't trust Windows to do that for you. You have to go to each website and check. If you submit a tech request to MM they will tell you to do that first.

The oblivious culprits are the sound, video and printer. It could be another software, too. If you added anything, software or hardware and the issue started that's the problem. There can be an account permissions issue. You can create a new, test, account on your machine and try it.
