I recently ran into a problem trying to apply smart shape hairpins in bars that have "too many beats". I need to create "too many beats" in some bars because of the need to tweak those measures for special notation demands. Specifically, I needed to fill a 4/4 bar with half-note tremolo chords requiring 2 groups of 2 half-notes, each group connected by tremolo quavers created in shape expressions. So, it means squeezing 4 half-notes into a 4/4 bar and "leaving the measure alone".

The problem arises when trying to place a decrescendo hairpin on beat 3. When updating the layout, the hairpin moves way into the next bar because it attaches itself to the extra beats/notes that were literally beyond the bar, even though the visible notes were manually fixed within. There seems to be no option to attach the shape to just the desired measure, or better, not have it attach to anything at all and be freely placed.

Here is the desired hairpin placement:

And here's what happens on layout update (print command causes this also):

Note the misplaced hairpin.

Am I missing something? Must this smart shape always need to be attached to something? I see no option for disabling the "smart" element, or attaching to measure rather than note or beat.

Please help,

Michael

The easiest way (one click) to create tremolos like these is with the TG Tools "Easy Tremolos" plugin, included with Finale. This plugin does not overfill the measure, so there is no problem with the wedges.

The only problem is that the plugin does not separate the beams from the stems. You'll need to do this using Special Tools > Beam Extension Tool.

Thanks, Bruce. Hadn't known that solution. Still, would be great to have a free floating option for smart shapes.
