Just a guess- Paste the lyrics into the lyric window. Press Escape to leave the Lyric Tool for the Selection Tool. Reselect the Lyric Tool and try the Click Assignment again. Does that work?

You could try saving the file as XML (File Menu > Export XML) and opening the XML in Finale. This often strips out any bad stuff in the original Finale file. You might lose some formatting, however.
