When I start Finale 2014.5 from my computer everything usually works fine. But when I directly open an existing Finale file (for exampele one of my own Compositions) without starting the program first, it doesn't function the right way. First of all, a menu opens: "Default MIDI Output Device" - A device ID has been used that is out of range for your system. (I get this message with my standard MIDI device in, but also with my other MIDI devices, or without...). Some Palettes on the top of my page are missing. And I also get the message that there is a new update for my system, Finale 2014.5!

When starting from the Finale icon on my desktop everything works fine again with Finale 2014.5! Like it used to, before today....

So, what can I do to change this?

Thanks in advance,

Hi Joop,

It sounds like when you open a Finale file directly, you're actually opening Finale 2014 instead of Finale 2014.5.

If you right-click a file and choose Open With > Finale 2014.5 or change the default program for .mus and .musx Finale files in your Control Panel, then you'll be sure to always open files with Finale 2014.5 instead of older versions.

Hi Chad,

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately it didn't work. I even removed my older Finale 2014 via the Control Panel, but when starting by dubbelclicking on a Finale file it doesn't open. There is also no possibility by opening it by 'Open With>Finale 2014.5' etc. So there has to be something else that's wrong.
Fortunately I can open my files by just opening Finale 2014.5 on my computer and then opening the files in the program. Hopefully the coming update/upgrade of Finale with solve the problem. And off course I can always delete all Finale software from my computer and installing it again....

Thanks for your help!

Joop,

I've uninstalled and reinstalled several versions of Finale on my Windows 7 PC over the years, and I've found that the default program association for .MUS and .MUSX does funny things, particularly if I've installed an older version after installing a newer version, though there are probably other situations where this may happen. The bottom line is I agree with you that reinstalling Finale 2014.5 is a good idea!

I just received my Finale 2014 Edition for my Dell Windows 10.  I need to install, but no install directions are provided. Is there a link to go to. I put the CD in the computer. Now what? Do I go to Desktop? Downloads? what? No clue here. At a total loss! I can play piano, but can't operate my new computer like my sons do and they no longer live at home! Help!

With the new Finale 25 installation. All the problems are solved. Strangely, when I opened again an older Finale file from my Compositions folder, it opened with the old Finale 2014.5. (That used to be the older Finale 2014! But with 'Open With>Finale 25 (Always use this program for opening Finale files', now I could choose Finale 25. Now everything is working fine!

Hello Donna, Use the Windows Explorer to find your DVD/CD, click on it and open Finale program by double clicking on the Finale icon or the install icon (right-click>open). That should do it.
