I signed up for Finale's 30 day trial for the purpose only of scanning and transposing music.  Do I need to purchase Smartscore to be able to do this?

Finale 25 will not scan printed music (unless you already own a program to convert printed music to an XML file or the like). The included scanning option has been removed in the move from Finale 2014.5 to Finale version 25.

Scanning music has be removed from Finale v25, but is still available in previous versions of Finale. If you're wanting to scan music, I would highly suggest looking into other software beyond SmartScore. PhotoScore, Capella, SharpEye, and a couple others are also good choices. Good luck!

I never cared much for SmartScore Lite, bundled with previous versions of Finale. It works but is limited. Buying Finale 2014.5 from a reseller just to get SSL? I don't recommend it but it can still be done.

SmartScore X2 Pro is pretty good once you get past the instructions that still assume we all have PPCs. TWAIN drivers haven't been supported since OS 10.5 -- all references to them are out of date as is the nonsense that HP scanners and all-in-ones don't work. The correct instructions are buried in there but they should have been rewritten years ago  Otherwise, its MusicXML output is better than many others where Finale is concerned. SS X2 Pro is actually a notation program but I don't know anyone who uses it that way including myself.

The upgrade price from SmartScore Lite was $199. Without, SSL, the price for Finale owners is $299.

Street price for SS X2 Pro from resellers such as Sweetwater and Musicians Friend etc. is $349. If you shop around, you can do even better. Google is your friend.
