It's hard without seeing the score, but one solution that springs to mind is to add an additional (hidden) tempo mark around the area where playback suddenly slows down.

Another thought... there isn't a note (or rest) with a fermata attched close by is there? The standard HP setting is to slow down before a fermata.

No fermata present.

What's weird is that the full band score plays right through no problem. But when I extract the part (and I extracted it again just to be sure), the extracted part slows down as I described.

As I said, it's hard to analyse the issue without the score.

an you upload a link to the score. Unfortunately, you'll have to first load the score onto a file sharing service such as dropbox (don't ask me how, I don't have any filesharing accounts) then post a link to that file here.

Alternatively, head over to forum.makemusic.com That forum is still active and does allow for for file uploads.

I've created an excerpt of the score and an extracted part. You can find them at www.SoundingRocket.com/finale/index.html

The score excerpt plays the tempo normally.  But the extracted part slows down around measure 8.

Well, I've found what's causing the problem in the extracted part.

Go to MIDI/Audio->Human Playback

Currently you have "Standard" selected.

Change that to "Custom"

A new window will pop up. Make sure that "Custom" is listed in the "Copy From" drop down.

On the lower right hand side is "Interpret Harmonic cadences". This setting adjusts tempo based on what it feels are the cadences of the piece at the time. Usually the effect is slight but it can often be jerky.

deselect that then click OK.

Now when you play back, it seems to work.

If you're wanting to have the tempo of the full score match across the board, make that change in the main score as well.

For whatever reason, with that setting enabled, and only in this exctraced part (and also if you play the part in the main score) HP has decided that the starting tempo is whatever is displayed in the playback control tempo box. It will make its first tempo adjustment around measure 7 then revert the tempo to (what it thinks) is the starting tempo halfway through measure 8. It will not accept *any* tempo markings after that.

You can have fun by entering a stupid value into the playback control and pressing play.

Anyway... changing the HP playback setting clears the issue, but I suggest that you open a support ticket and report this as a bug.
