The soprano looks like it is double printed (looks like bold face),and a measure of rests appears behind each measure of notes. Trying "layers" to correct it does not work. How can I get rid of the extra measures of rests without losing allm work? --which runs through the entire piece. I have no idea what I did to cause this.

Can you post a screenshot here? I'm having problems trying to visualise what is going on.
Use the snipping tool to get the screenshot of a couple of measures.
(To open Snipping Tool, select the Start button, type Snipping Tool, and then select it in the search results. )
