If you use one of the more recent versions of Finale, Optimization has been replaced by a Hide Empty Staves option as well as staff styles for collapsing or cutaway of staves or parts of staves.

I'm in 4/4 meter, and want a bar of 5 quarter notes. Going to the triplet icon, I change the boxes to read "5 quarter notes in the space of 4 quarter notes". I start to enter my quarter notes and place the quintuplet sign to the initial quarter note, but it won't let me enter a fifth one. What am I doing wrong? Would certainly appreciate any help with this!

Please specify the steps you've already taken, so that we can rule out things.

Have you e. g. tried de-selecting “Check for Extra Notes”?

Actually, shortly after posting my question, I stumbled upon a solution. It's probably not the easiest way of doing it, but I entered 4 quarter notes, then clicked the triplet icon which showed "3 quarter notes in the space of 2" onto the first quarter note. I then put another quarter note in the measure, which then moved it to the proceeding measure (with the extra note being right on the bar line). I then deleted the triplet, and entered the "5 quarter notes in the space of 4" on the first note. This allowed me to enter all 5 quarter notes. How does one de-select the extra notes?

What entry tool are you using? - Speedy Entry? - Simple Entry?

Both entry tools have a “Check for Extra Notes” option.
