Just wondering if when I apply a dynamic marking to one of the staves in a piano score, does it automatically apply to both staves, or do I need to manually apply it to both staves? I have Finale 14.5 on Windows 10.

If you have both staves on the same MIDI channel in the Score Manager, the dynamics should apply to both staves, but there are some times a hairpin will keep affecting one (bottom) staff past the point where I have put a target dynamic marking in only one (top) staff. If I hear that happening, I just add a hidden dynamic marking to the second staff of the Group.

(I have also built a grand staff using two staves on separate MIDI channels in order to handle their dynamics separately.)

Adrian,

Thank you for your reply of two years ago!!

I had been struggling with how to apply separate dynamics to each piano staff.

Now that I see what you did, it is really rather obvious.  "Now that I see..." :-

I have noted that dynamics apply to each staff (if on separate channels), but crescendi and decrescendi markings (hairpins) apply to both.

This, and realizing that I had not been using GPO4 (I now have GPO5) and thereby not making full using of layers and channels, has had a major impact on my audio outputs!

Thank you, again,

:-)

Glad I could help. Another trick I sometimes use is to put hidden accents on specific voices to bring out interior melodies.

Ah!

Great idea. I really like the option to "Show" or to hide something.

I often use the "hide" option for metronome markings to fine tune ritardandi, and to give a more personal interpretation of playback, etc
