Hi
I have installed Finale 25 but when I click on an existing file the older version of Finale opens. I have to go to applications and to open 25 and then open the files in 25. How do I make Finale 25 the default version?
Thanks
Nigel
I am having the same annoying problem. I am running Mac Sierra, the latest release, and installed Finale 25 but Finale 2014.5 is hidden in the launchpad. When I locate an old Finale file I want to open in Finder, if I forget to start 25, it will automatically open 2014.5. I would love to just throw 2014.5 in the trash but I am afraid to. Please let us know how to keep the older version of Finale from opening when we double click on a finale file in Finder.
Easy fix on a Mac. This goes back to OS 8 or 7 and works with every application.
Do GetInfo on an older file. You'll see Open with and, in this case, 2014.5 will be visible. Change to 25. You'll see a check box to open similar files with the same app. Check it. You'll get a dialog box asking if you really mean to do this. Click yes.
Now, all offer Finale.musx files will open in 25. If you have pre-2012 .mus files, find one and do the same to get them defaulting to 25.
Thank you, Mike. I tried this but I'm running OS 10 Sierra and it's different now. I was able to change one file by clicking the file in finder, then clicking File>Open With. Then, I see three different versions of Finale, as well as App Store, and Other. I tried clicking "other" and selecting Finale (25 just shows up as Finale) out of a list of all the apps on the Mac, but the only block to check is for "always open with" "Recommended Applications" or "All Applications" in a drop down. The problem it seems is that Finale 2014.5 is listed as the default of all the Finale apps in the first drop down. Do you have any idea how to change the default Finale app to 25? I have Apple Care for my Mac and can ask Apple support if this is something Finale doesn't know. Right now, I am only able to change one file at a time to open with Finale 25 unless I remember to open Finale 25 before I get started. Thanks again.
Thank you, Mike. Since our systems are different, I figured out an easy way to stop 2014.5 from popping up. I set the Finale 25 icon in the dock at the bottom of the desktop screen (I think that's what it's called, I came from the PC world) to open at login. Now I don't have to waste time with Apple Support or figure out what is different between your system and mine. I use Finale almost every time I login, so that seems to work for me.
Our systems are identical. GetInfo and assigning the apps that open old files is unchanged in Sierra 10.12.1. I have Finale 2011c, 2014.5 and 25.1.
My .musx files open in 25.1 because I set them exactly as I posted.
I have a few .mus files that I have set to open in 2011—those are used only to answer questions that people post on the forums.
Mike, somehow tonight when I tried Get Info, the screen looked like you said it would. It never looked like that before. I was able to change the default to Finale from Finale 2014.5 this way, and it asked me if I wanted to change all files like that. The only difference from before is that I had set Finale 25 to open at login and it was running in the background when I went into Finder to Get Info on an old file. So the problem is solved for me. Thank you again.
