After about 240 measures of perfect playback of a cello + piano score, suddenly the piano stops playing back. Occasionally it plays a few notes then stops again. I've tried reimporting the piano part from a file in which it plays back with no problem but that doesn't change anything. I have no idea why this could be happening. I restarted the computer but that didn't make any difference either. Any ideas will be much appreciated.

Try two things, Select all>Clear selected items>None> MIDI data>OK. Next MIDI Audio>Reassign playback sounds.

You might want to check your Playback settings (the gear) and make sure it is set to, End of piece.

Thanks Ernest. I tried the two MIDI adjustments but neither worked. Playback settings are correct (to end).

Solved the problem by deleting totally the problematic measures and importing them from a different XML file. I suppose that the original file (imported from XML) was corrupted. Even when I copied and pasted the newly imported measures over the old ones, the problem persisted. Seems like bad stuff remains even when you select "Clear All Items" or copy and paste over the corrupted measures. Strange ..... !!??

Just to add the definitive resolution of the problem: after importing an XML file some dynamics were "hidden" (invisible) and these measures were silent because the hidden dynamic was "empty/unspecified". Only by clicking on the "Expression Tool" did the little square that indicates an expression in the part (hidden dynamic) show up. Then I could eliminate it or change it to a real dynamic and the problem was solved.
