Noticed an issue, lately. I am running a Windows 10 Desktop computer. I use Speedy Entry using my computer keyboard to input my notation.

It happens kind of randomly when I enter a note with my keyboard, a pitch I entered will keep sounding, until I click around on the score and find a spot which will stop the note from its continuing and very irritating sound. Needless to say, it is a terrible distraction to the workflow!

I am using the Garritan Playback. When checking MIDI/Audio, the only thing I see with a checkmark is..........Playback Finale through VST. There is nothing else checked.

As always, I really appreciate your assistance and appreciate your time to help solve my issue, today.

I have noticed it too. I don't know why and being random doesn't make it any easier to track down. This may be a MM tech ticket issue. If we both submit one perhaps it will get MM going on a solution or why. Use the "Submit a request" button at the top of this page.

Mike and Ernest, I have tried to use the "All Notes Off" from the MIDI/Audio Menu, and I have not had a locked note issue this afternoon, I will be working on my arrangement, more this evening. I will keep you posted on this issue. I thank both Ernest and Michael for helping solve my issue. I will submit a MM tech ticket if this continues. It is so annoying and breaks concentration and your workflow.

Never too old to learn I guess. I had no idea that command was for this because I never have used it before. I don't ever remember having the issue until 27, perhaps it was in 26 also. I can't test it today as it is concert day at Old Shawnee Town for the Old Shawnee Days festival. We're doing a couple of my pieces!

No good news, here. I have been working on my project on my laptop, at Dunkin this morning. The issue has followed me to my Dell laptop. I am getting a stuck note, even after I go to MIDI menu and select "All Notes Off." I have to do this almost continually. I did copy my Finale File onto a memory stick to bring it with me, today. It almost has to be an issue imbedded into my Finale installation, setup, or my file generated with my Finale. I will probably submit a case to MM, tomorrow.

Actually I had my doubts as to whether that command would work but alas I am not at my Finale computer to try it. I don't remember having the issue before at least 26. Best thing to do it to still fill out a support ticket at the top of this page. I did mine already so we'll see what if any solution MM has.

MikeR has a Mac so it may work differently for him.

After a rather long discussion with Chad Mathis from MM tech support, there seems to be no answer. The fact it is random, at least it is on my machine, makes it more difficult to solve. Chad has been extremely helpful and has done testing on his end. Again random is a problem.

His reply.

"Hi Ernie,
Thanks for the update.

Based on what you have shared here, the only variable that has been changed was changing your Audio Driver from DirectSound to ASIO. Since the stuck note problem has not happened in this time, I believe that rules out my hypothesis that HP was related.

For now, I'd encourage you to continue working with ASIO to make sure the problem stays away. Additionally, if any of your colleagues on the forum are also Windows users, you may want to share this tidbit with them in case they'd like to try it. If we can replicate this result on another Windows system, then that would be a significant finding. Unfortunately, that setting doesn't apply on the Mac platform, as all audio device use the same CoreAudio OS framework, but for now I'd say let's stay the course we're on to make sure this problem stays away.

To avoid clogging your inbox with automated check-in messages, I'll solve our ticket for now, but if you have any other relevant info to share about this case, please feel free to reply and reopen it.

All the best,

Chad Mathis"

"Hi Ernie,
Thanks for letting me know the detail about MIDI playback. The audio output for MIDI playback is set in a different plan the output for VST playback, so it's likely you can restore MIDI playback by simply checking this output setting:

  1. Choose MIDI/Audio > Device Setup > MIDI Setup.
  2. Click the SoftSynth Settings
  3. Set the output device and device in the SoftSynth Settings dialog box and test playback through MIDI.

Please keep us posted on your progress, and have a great weekend!

Chad Mathis"

"Hello Ernie,
Thanks for the reply. I beg your pardon for missing that you had reset preferences.

Both yesterday and this morning, I spent time with your file inputting a series of notes with Speedy Entry for several minutes, and so far I have not been able to replicate this behavior. As you have shared, this is an intermittent behavior that others have also encountered. However, since I have yet to replicate it on my, my best suggestion at preset is two general troubleshooting tests that I'd like you to try to see if they prevent this behavior from recurring. Because of its intermittent nature, it may take a little time before we know if these suggestions have any effect, but my intention to isolate specific variables that I suspect may be related in an effort to narrow down potential causes. So, with that in mind, here are my suggestions:

  1. Firstly, set Human Playback to "None" under MIDI/Audio, then continue using Speedy Entry as you normally would for a day or so. If you are working on more than one file, please remember to toggle HP to None in each successive file you open. Do you encounter stuck notes with HP off?
  2. After spending a day working with HP set to None, set it back to Standard. Then, choose MIDI/Audio > Play Finale Through MIDI. This temporarily reassigns your playback sounds to SmartMusic SoftSynth, our general MIDI sounds. While I realize these are not as pleasant as the Garritan libraries, my intention here is to see whether or not this behavior occurs in these circumstances or not.

While these tests are bit broad and may take some time, they are important of the process for me to eliminate variables in an effort to narrow down what might be contributing, which is essential to reporting this to our product management in a meaningful way. I look forward to hearing any updates you're able to provide.

Best regards,

Chad Mathis"

Ernest,

I think I have my sticking note entry fixed. I have been working with a couple of techs. at MM. This "fix" came from Tim W., and I will gladly share it with you. When Tim W had me remove the 27 File Folder, it did not fix it; however, I noticed a 26 File Folder that I didn't remove. I went back and removed it, and another folder just marked "Finale," and that solved my sticking entry note issue, so far! Here is the step-by-step solution Tim emailed to me. Make sure you remove all of the Finale File Folders, as I had, in the past deleted Finale 26, but the one folder still remained on my computer. Note, this is on a Windows 10 desktop and laptop comp.

Hi Denver,

I'm sorry this is still happening for you.  Thank you for sending the document.  I tested it on my end and this isn't occurring for me, which let's us know that it isn't document specific.  Let's first try a clean reinstall to see if a fresh instance of the program can resolve the problem:

1.      You will need to be logged in to this computer on a user account that has full administrative rights

2.      Close Finale

3.      Hold down the WINDOWS key on your computer keyboard and type the letter "R" to open the Run dialog box

4.      Type or copy & paste the following:

·         appwiz.cpl

5.      Click OK

6.      In your Programs and Features list, right-click on "Finale", and then choose Uninstall

7.      Hold down the WINDOWS key and type the letter "R" to open the Run dialog box

8.      Type or copy & paste the following:

·         C:\Program Files\MakeMusic\Finale

9.      Click 'OK'

10. Find and delete the "27" folder. (If you have any personal files saved here, be sure to remove them first.)

11. Hold down the WINDOWS key and type the letter "R" to open the Run dialog box

12. Type or copy & paste the following:

·         %appdata%\MakeMusic

13. Click OK

14. Delete the "Finale 27" folder. (If you have any personal files saved here, be sure to remove them first)

15. Empty the Recycle Bin

16. Restart the computer

17. Re-install Finale by downloading it from your MakeMusic account

Let me know your results.

Best,

Tim W. | Customer Support Representative | MakeMusic, Inc.

Denver,

Thanx for taking the time to respond. However I have no other instance of Finale and of course have done a clean re-install. The problem is random and that makes it difficult to diagnose. It may not happen for a while even a long while but comes back. I hope yours is gone.

I sent two charts to MM. One was my last concert band piece where it did happen and my latest solo trombone and Piano piece and it did not happen.

This is my latest concert band piece where it did happen  https://youtu.be/eQoyzcVgwYU

All the best,

EB

One thing this thread shows is that Finale support (Chad) does respond. Whenever I have consulted them, they have been prompt and helpful. I tip my hat to them!

It has not happened on several piece I was editing because of corrections or edits. However, no joy! In my latest new piece it happened not only in Speedy but in Simple, too.

"However, no joy!" Ernest, I too, thought MM tech support had this one solved, with the steps they had given to me; however, while doing some editing of my arrangement before the printing of my parts, the issue reappeared. It wasn't too severe, but it did require clearing of the sustaining note/notes several times. I am kind of anxious to try another arrangement, and see if the sustained entry note comes back, in a brand, spanking, new, document. I also experienced some margin-issues with the same arrangement when I prepared and edited my parts. I would get on my parts, let's say five lines on my part's page that had perfect left-hand margins. Then I would get three lines which the left-hand margins did not line up (were indented) with the other five lines.

I had to go into the page tool and pull each line's left-hand margin over, to match the other five lines. It was really frustrating. I have been a Finale-user for at least 25 years and never had such issues pop-up on a file I was producing, using Finale.

I am hoping this, one, file was just corrupted and caused these issues.

Ernest, I hope we can both solve this issue. I do greatly appreciate the posters of this Forum who so kindly give their time to help those of us who have problems. These persons are not new to me but have been helping me for the same 25 years I have been using Finale. Also, a big shout out to the MM-staff who have offered very good solutions, in a VERY timely manner. Their concern for my issues was very evident to me!

I, too, commend the MM tech team. However, I don't think there is a solution at least with certain sound setups on certain computers.

As to your page margin issue have you got the Page format wizard plugin script?  You need it. There are a few, actually very few plug0ns that I consider essential for Finale composer/arrangers. You can find it here https://www.finalelua.com/scripts

Most scripts and/or plugins are not worth it but this one is. Again it is how Finale should have been from the box. Being a script you need LUA and RPG LUA is the best. You can get it here https://robertgpatterson.com/-fininfo/-rgplua/rgplua.html

Like I say most scripts/plugins are not worth the effort but a few are very valuable.
