I'm on version 27.4.1.110 using Windows 10 Pro

Today I tried to create a new woodwinds piece with one flute, 2 clarinets in Bb.  I gave the file a title and a subtitle. Initially, when creating the new file, it would crash as soon as the document tried to actually load, giving the "Finale has encountered an error and will close." - no further information.

It did this 4 or 5 times before I created a file with only flute, and then added 2 clarinets after document creation. That seemed to work fine but after getting about 6 measures in, I got the same error and crash.

I have done a full virus scan as well as rebooted my computer. All my drivers etc are up-to-date.  The only thing I could find tangentially related in my failed googling was itunes somehow maybe screwing something up. Itunes tried to force an update as soon as I opened finale for the first time today, but I've checked through my task manager and there are no itunes or apple programs running in the background at all.

Any ideas what may be causing this and/or how I can fix this?

Yes.

The problem is simple you have a conflict somewhere on your system. The solution isn't as simple. Finding it. The fact you got further in the second try isn't a factor nor is the first try at a score. The conflict just took longer to manifest.

You mentioned itunes so I would totally uninstall it as a first effort. The two places where Finale has never got alone with other apps is sound and printers. You can also remove all your printers. One other places is video but I think it low on the list of conflicts in your case.

You need to see and know what if anything changed between the time Finale worked and didn't.  Did you add an app? Did you add any hardware? Something changed.

Thanks Ernest. The fact that finale never got along with printers gives me an idea. I had a big problem with my printer last week. I'll try uninstalling that first.

I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling both my printer drivers and finale and that seems to have fixed it for now.

Thanks again Ernest
