Hi to all the faithful still visiting here :-)

I have decided against Dorico in favor of MuseScore.
MuseScore (so far) has not had problems Import xml files--.xml and .musicxml.

However, not so with Finale, which I will use until I can't.

I have tried Importing files into MuseScore and then Exporting them with hopes of opening them in Finale, but not luck.
Regardless of what I do, I have been getting this error message

Any ideas, suggestions?

MuseScore never supported MusicXML 3.1 and I'm pretty sure that it doesn't support 4.0 yet — might change when MuseScore 5 is released.

 

Try setting your Finale MusicXML Import/Export Preferences to 3.0 and see if that doesn't solve a lot of problems. Also turn off error reporting.

 

I often download MuseScore files from their web site as .xml and have no problem importing them into Finale — useable but not great especially Lyrics, Expressions and Text. Remember that .xml files are 3.0 and earlier while .musicxml is 3.1 and 4.0 (mxl is condensed—don't use that). 

 

MuseScore has never handled .xml Import/Export as well as some other apps. This has been getting better but is far from what I consider good.
