Hello! I have some grace notes tied to notes that follow (see attached). The spacing is bad and the ties look bad. I tried increasing the grace-note spacing in document options, but that's not helping because it's not the space between grace notes, but rather the space between grace notes and regular notes. Advice?

To fix the spacing,

- toggle Automatic Music Spacing off,

- space the notes manually.

When you space the notes manually, you can move the notes precisely (= by typing numerical values) via the very technical Speedy Entry dialog box Edit Frame.

Other thoughts:

1) In the very first chord, consider flipping the stem - so that the tie connects two up-stem notes.

Similarly at the end of the second measure.

2) The placement of slurs (above/below) seems inconsistent.

Try flipping all the slurs above.

I would add that you can adjust grace note positions manually by selecting "Keep Current" from [Document Options>Music Spacing] under "Grace Note Spacing." Using the Note Position Tool (from the special tools palette), you can then adjust the space between the grace notes and the "regular note."

Peter, turning off automatic music spacing is a temporary solution because editing the score elsewhere requires it to be on. I don't know what the proper placement of the slurs should be. I chose the way it is in the picture because I thought it looks the best. Are the slurs from grace notes supposed to be a certain way? If yes, I'll do it that way.

George, I was not aware of the keep current spacing. That worked. Thanks!

I wonder if the music spacing options should just be called spacing. After all, Finale is a music program. This is like searching for "app" in the app store.

You are on the right track regarding the placement (above/below) of slurs:

Place the slurs the way they look best.

My thoughts:

1) Grace notes are (usually) upstem notes.

2) On upstem notes ties usually look best if they curve downwards.

3) Because of 2) it is usually easier for the performer to distinguish slurs and ties if slurs go above grace notes - so that the slurs point to stems.

I don't know if I should comment here or make a new post.  I suddenly find my grace notes do not allow me to add ties to them.  What is going on?  I can see other users can do this fine, and I remember being able to before.

Just to clarify, I'm talking about the grace note in the last bar of this example.

George Holloway,

You are using Windows Finale v27 - right?

Does this problem happen in all documents?

- Or is the problem document specific?
