I have been a long time Finale user, but stopped writing music for a number of years. I am looking to purchase from a friend a Finale 2014 edition, or maybe just upgrade to the current version. As I looked at his 2014 edition I am wanting to ask a simple question…

I am using an M-Audio Audiophile 24x96 midi card. And from there the midi goes to my Proteus 1 and Proteus 2 modules (yes, I know this is old). In Finale 2004 I know how to setup and map the interface to access these sounds, but in 2014 I am stuck as to what to do.

I can access Midi setup, and choose the Delta option (for the M-Audio audiophile card). Then I get to the menus that show sounds 1-16 and 17-32 etc. But how do I access the Proteus sounds? They are not listed. It seems like I have the info somewhere as to what these sounds are. Do I have to edit an *.INI file or something?

As we tried it on his computer I can only play the Soft synth sounds using VST out. And it does not sound very good.

So, before I buy his program (2014) or buy new, does the current version have a better way to access these sounds? Again, M-Audio Delta audiophile midi card, going to Proteus 1 and Proteus 2 modules is the setup and here is a link to the sound card interface…

Thanks.

Without going through Bidule or some similar software, you will not likely be able to combine Finale internal sounds with Proteus sounds, and you will need to set your output to MIDI and send the Bank and Program number for each sound to tell the Proteus what to play. (Hope you saved the manuals or can pull them up on line.)

I have not done this myself with Finale, although I did test out the process from Dorico to see if I could drive my Yamaha DX7. It worked, but I'll never use it.

You may find long term that a more flexible/convenient solution will be to try to find a softsynth version/emulator (if available) of your Proteus sounds and take care of all sound production digitally within the computer. It will make saving to WAV or MP3 sound files much easier.

One problem...in the older versions of Finale we used to have to Import a Proteus 1 or Proteus II library first. No one has mentioned this. I did not get to the menus.

I Imported and older Library file with these sounds. And then I went into the Midi area and selected top use the Delta Out option. then went into Score Mgr. and clicked on the instrument and all I had were General Midi sounds on a menu, not the Proteus.

Also, when I switched to MIDI out it was not going out thru my MIDI.

I had to use VST.

I am literally thinking of going back to Finale 2000.
