Hello,

I have Finale 2014.5 using Windows 10 and have been frustrated trying to get the roll playback using TG tools to work correctly. I am trying to get the double strokes in the snare part to sound as written but I get no change after adding the slash and using the plug-in. What am I doing wrong?

1-I use the launch window to create a new document and set it up with a typical drumline (snareline, tenorline, Bass Drums 5 line, and cymbal line)

2- I enter the notes on the "snare section hits" line of the snare drum part

3-I use the articulation tool to add a slash (#32) across some of the 16th notes

4-I select the measure with the selection tool and go to Plug ins/TG Tools/Smart Playback...

5-I click "Go" and the following error appears "Nothing done (no Smart Shapes or Articulations found for the selected Smart Playback Options, or no free layers)

I did basically what you did, but I did not use the TG Plug-in, and the slashes played back fine in Standard HP.

I notice the last panel of the Smart Playback Plug-in by default has a box to Override HP. Even with that unchecked, the articulations do not play.

But why use the Smart Playback at all? None of the panels even mention using the slash notations, and (as you say) seem to ignore them.

Hi Adrian,

Thanks for the idea. However, just using Standard HP, the articulations do not play back. The double strokes just sound as regular single strokes.

In the Smart Playback dialog box, the top line under the "trills etc." tab refers to diddles ("trills, tremolos, diddles") which are single slashed notes so unless their terminology is wrong, the Smart Playback panel does indeed refer to slashed notations.

Could it be a version difference I am dealing with? I see you are on 25 and I am on 2014.5.

Any input is appreciated

Thank you

I just found I had better luck when not using Smart Playback. I cannot say for certain, but I doubt the version difference between 2014.5 and v25 is the reason.

Have you tried making a short trial file to test how the slash articulations affect playback?

I just tried making a brand new document and discovered some things:

-on the new document, the diddles play back correctly (kind of) when you press the play button and therefore Human Playback takes the time to scan ahead first. I was using the space Bar as a quick playback and it did not play back correctly using that method.

-As soon as I set the HP to Marching Band, the playback was rudimental and therefore correct to the style I wanted. That makes absolute sense

-I would like to be able to use the space bar playback method as it's quicker for a brief listen of a small segment ant that is what TG tools is supposed to do. It takes your music and creates the proper playback in layer 4 and hides it from printing. Therefore it always plays back the way it's intended and displays the way it is intended.

???Does anyone know why TG tools isn't working correctly???

If I understand you correctly, you would like to get correct playback saved in the document (e. g. in a hidden layer), rather than created “on the fly” so that you can use Spacebar playback, right?

You could try this:

MIDI Tool.

MIDI Tool menu > Apply Human Playback…

Joey,

Starting playback with the Space Bar always plays without invoking Human Playback, so Peter's idea to Apply HP using the MIDI Tool (not the Menu, the Tool, which supplies a new menu) is likely the best solution.
