Red notes usually mean they are in Layer 2. What layer have you chosen in the bottom left of your Finale window?

Adrian is correct, about the layers. You need to be in the correct one to edit. With the selection tool, double click on one of those notes. It will switch to the Simple Entry tool, and put you in the correct layer.

It is the transposition/arrangement of the Irish tune Kerry Dance that I had already completed and actually printed out, but wanted to make some changes to it--just am puzzled by the red bass notes and the fact that the tool doesnot work on them. I feel really stupid
