I am very fluent in "Finale-ese" and I'm losing my mind over this -- is there a bug in my software? Has anyone else had any problems in Finale 25 with staves in parts inexplicably overlapping? If any saint out there opens this document and goes to the part "Test Piano Vocal" you will see that starting at bar 25, the staves begin to overlap, and I can't un-overlap them. I have tried re-generating all of the parts. Showing/re-hiding staves, grouping/ungrouping the vocal staves. What is going on? I have submitted a ticket on this, but I expect it will be several days before I hear anything back from them. THANK YOU anyone that has time to look at this!!!

To me it seems like there are overlapping staves, not in meas. 25, but in meas. 23 and 24.

I was able to “un-overlap” the staves via the dialog box Staff Usage.

Some of the staves have their Distance from Top of Previous Staff set to zero.

I changed it to 80pt for each and every staff.

Peter -- THANK YOU so much for your reply. But this still isn't working for me. If you don't mind opening my file one more time (same link) go to page 6 of the "Test Piano Vocal" part. You will see the overlapping staves in the second system. If I highlight that system, or a staff in that system (make sure the highlighting only includes that one system) when I go to Staff Usage, you will see all sorts of other staves from the full score being included in the dialogue box list (guitar, violin, viola) -- parts that are not included in the Test Piano Vocal and don't show up in scroll view. Why are they showing up? Just out of curiosity, I started adjusting the space above each staff in the staff usage, and now it is displaying staves on page 6 that are not included in the Test Piano Vocal part! What the heck is going on???

Sorry -- on page 6 there is only one system. You'll see the overlapping starting on the 3rd or 4th staff down -- under the other parts I mentioned that shouldn't be showing up in this part at all! THANK YOU AGAIN!!!

Brad Haak,

In the linked part "Test Piano Vocal", on Page 6 I can see two systems, namely System 10 and System 11.

System 10 includes meas. 23 and 24.

Here I see overlapping staves.

System 11 includes meas. 25 through 39.

Here I see no overlapping staves (sorry!).

But System 11 is locked - with 15 (fifteen!) measures squeezed together.

I would unlock System 11, and distribute those 15 measures over more systems.

Thank you again, Peter for your help. But I'm so confused. I've just saved the document again. My staves are so screwed up now, I show a blank page 9 (I can't even find system 11 - and my bars skip 41 - 44, which are in the missing system 11) and on page 8, its showing staves that aren't even part of this part (I.e. an alto clef viola stave.) When I click on the out-of-place staves on that page, it calls them all Vocal 1.

Does it look completely different on your computer?

Is it something wrong with my version of Finale?

… Does it look completely different on your computer? …

This is what I see on Page 6 - and this is what I described in my previous post:

… Is it something wrong with my version of Finale?  …

I do not know.

But I suspect that your Finale document is corrupted.

As a test (not a solution) you could export your document as a MusicXML file, and import that MusicXML file into an empty Finale document.

Ok, its opening differently on our two computers, unless there's something strange happening with Dropbox. This is my page 6

This feels like when they train lifeguards how to approach a drowning victim so they don't get pulled under water by their flailing limbs. (I am not the lifeguard in this situation.)

… I wonder if it hadn't refreshed before you opened it this most recent time …

I think that you are right.
I downloaded your Finale document again, and now I see the same as you.

Let us take the problems one by one:

A.
… I show a blank page 9 (I can't even find system 11 - and my bars skip 41 - 44, which are in the missing system 11 …

System 11 is there al right, on Page 9.
But it is waaaay down below the bottom of the page.
I had to zoom out to 40 % before I could see the system number, and out to 20 % before I could see the music in System 11.
The culprit:
In System 11, in the Staff Usage for the top staff (= Vocal 1), the Distance from Top of Previous Staff is set to a whopping 5760pt = 960s = 480p = 80i
(!)

I suspect that - in your Finale - Measurement Units are set to Inches, right?
Personally I seldom set the Measurement Units to Inches.
I mostly need to use smaller units, like Points, or EVPUs.

Perhaps you wanted to change the Distance from Top of Previous Staff to 80pt, but forgot to type the two letters ‘pt’ after the digits ‘80’ ?

B.
… on page 8, its showing staves that aren't even part of this part (I.e. an alto clef viola stave.) …

I, too, see those staves on Page 8. Those staves appear in the score, but they are not supposed to appear in this particular linked part. And they do not show up when I view the part in Scroll View.

I suspect file corruption.
I recommend that you send your Finale document to the folks in Tech Support.

C.
… This is my page 6 …

To me, Page 6 (with System 8) looks exactly as in your screen shot.
I see no overlapping staves, but:

System 8 is locked - with 4 measures squeezed together.
I would unlock System 8, and distribute those 4 measures over two systems.
