I am stumped... in the example below, there are two layers for the "A. Sx." cue. The piece is in 5/4 time.

Layer 1 is empty and shown by a centered whole rest in each measure.  Layer 2 contains the cue.

I just can't figure out how to duplicate these four measures as shown. I have tried everything I know within layers and voice 1/2...

I thought there was a "display default whole rest" option, but I can't find it today...

Thoughts?

You have to enter the layer one whole rests as tuplets, 4 quarters in the space of 5 quarters. Hide the number and bracket. Move the rests down to the correct position, and reduce the size of the cue notes.

In my speedy options I have "fill with rests at end of measure" unchecked. So, just entering a whole rest in layer one just works. I don't need to define it as a tuplet and hide anything.

Thanks Mike!!  That totally makes sense - and is what I tried first - BUT didn't seem to work though...

FINALE kept adding a quarter rest to complete the measure.   Then I remembered to uncheck the box in both speedy and simple entry options that automatically adds rests to fill the remainder of the measure. I turned that off and the single whole rest centered automatically and stays there through note/beat spacing updates, etc.

It appears that single "real" whole rests automatically center themselves regardless of the time signature (good to know!!!). However - a single whole note maintains it's position on beat one. Maybe this is a setting that I have turned on somewhere?

Here's how it ended up:

Worked great - THANKS!!

Mike:

Just saw your edited post - didn't need to do the tuplet thing... worked as shown above in my previous rather easily.

Jeffrey:

Just saw your entry - somehow remembered that option and then it worked. Thanks!
