I pretty much always use the "Handwritten Style (Jazz Font)" document style in the Document Setup Wizard. When I do this, I also need to load "Chord Suffix (Jazz Text).LIB to have chords show up correctly. Can't I just make these choices the default? How do I do that?

In the folder Document Styles you can find all the templates that appear in the Document Setup Wizard.

In the folder Document Styles, find the template "Handwritten Style (Jazz Font)", open it, and edit it until it is, as you need all new documents to be.

From now on, all new documents from the template "Handwritten Style (Jazz Font)" will be as you wished.

Already existing documents are not affected.

Thank you. How can I make this the default document style?

… How can I make this the default document style? …

When you are in the Document Setup Wizard, it displays the templates that are available in the folder Document Styles.

If you never need any of the other Document Styles, remove the other templates from the folder Document Styles, so that the Document Setup Wizard only sees the template "Handwritten Style (Jazz Font)".

To “play it safe”, do not delete the other templates, but rather move them to another folder.

Then you can always put the other templates back into the Document Styles folder - in case you should ever need them.

That didn't work. Now what?

Perhaps you went to the wrong Document Styles folder.

There are two - identically named - folder hierarchies.

One folder hierarchy resides at the root (system) level:

C:\ProgramData\MakeMusic\Finale\…

This folder hierarchy serves as a “backup” which Finale uses to restore lost default files.

The other folder hierarchy resides in your user account:

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\MakeMusic\Finale\…

This folder hierarchy contains the files you access when using Finale.

As you probably know, the AppData directory is normally hidden.

You must turn on "Show Hidden Files, Directories and Drives" under Folder Options of the Windows Explorer in order to be able to see it in the Windows Explorer app.

The files in the Document Styles directory can be either MUS or FTM.
