Hi. For many years I entered music into Finale using a Yamaha keyboard that was patched to an external Roland SC-D70 sound box and on to my Mac. With the new OS 10.13.5 I have, I've upgraded to Finale 25. It's not too surprising that my Roland box seems no longer usable (no Roland driver compatible with the new OS).

--(a) I presume I now have to patch directly from my keyboard to my Mac; but I can see that my current cables will not suffice and guess that I will need a MIDI interface, since the Roland had served as one. I haven't used a stand-alone MIDI interface since my years running a Mac Centris 650 in the 1990s! I note that Finale 25 has the capability of assigning 128 channels, though that may not be relevant to the question of best MIDI interface.

--(b) I had also used the Roland for excellent live-mic input into Finale and other programs, as it processed sound at a higher sampling rate than the iMic.

Do you recommend any particular affordable MIDI digital interfaces that would provide me both the appropriate keyboard connection and potentially also for live-instrument input into Finale that will have high sampling rates at an affordable price? Or will I have to resort to two separate items to accomplish these goals affordably?

Side notes: I'll probably need around 8 feet of MIDI cable. I also have purchased a range of Garritan sounds for Finale that I presume I will be able to utilize once I learn my way around them.

MANY thanks!

Tony

When my MIDI interface no longer worked with my new computer, I found a MIDI-to-USB cable on Amazon (Yamaha UX16, c. $50) to connect my DX7 to my Windows 10 machine.

If your MIDI keyboard ha a USB port, you don’t need an interface to a Mac. J Adrian has pointed out the cost effective solution if a DIN 5 is the only MIDi port out.

If you have other MIDI requirements, there are a ton of options.
