 Fin 25.5 Mac 10.13.4

When using the scrub playback feature (alt-spacebar, scrub cursor over music) the first note (or chord or whatever) doesn't seem to sound. As I continue to scrub the mouse the following notes sound OK, and all parts play from the score - it's just the first note that never sounds properly or there is an extremely clipped sound!

In fact, the same thing happens if I use the playback controls, or if I set off playback anywhere in the score with a spacebar+click, again the first notes don't sound or are very clipped. After this is goes OK.

I have my MIDI hooked up to a Yamaha Motif  XS rack with Play Finale through MIFI on and Midi thru set to Smart.

I've been using Finale for over 20 years and this used to work fine.

Grateful for any ideas others may have on this subject?

Jonathan

Are you starting with grace notes?

No, no grace notes in sight (and that's another problem!).

I've since noticed that this problem is occurring only on the first beat of each bar, the other beats playback OK but the first entry in each bar kind of holds up as you drag over the notes and then suddenly explodes a clipped sound! Very strange.

I wondered if it could be a problem with the USB signal or  too many USB cables, I have every socket in use, Sound Module, Midi Kbd, Mixing Desk, plus 4 usb's coming from my monitor sockets. But it never used to happen, scrub playback worked really well and I used it almost like real playback as you can slow up and speed up as required, brilliant when it functions but for now...not so good!

Another slightly related problem I have ALWAYS had is when I start playback from the playback controls the first bar is always clipped in, like the 1st 2 beats are squashed up together in a faster tempo and then it resumes around the 2nd or 3rd beat. I usually work round this problem by making the 1st bar one beat longer and adding a rest on the extra 1st beat, then it goes OK.

Now on Finale 26.1.0 and Scrub playback is still just as bad, if not worse! As I drag over the notes on the first beat in each measure it never sounds, or I get a faint clipped bleep of a note. This is just awful!

Does anyone else get this?

Does anybody have any ideas on how to resolve the problem please?

What I hear depends on how fast I move the mouse over the notes; and in page view, going from one system to the next naturally involves a break in the sound.

Speed doesn't matter, and I'm in scroll view, so there are no breaks.

What I HAVE discovered today is a score with 7 staves plays back in scrub mode (alt-spacebar-drag over music with mouse) fine, the start of each measure is precise and clear with all voices sounding.

Then, if I add 23 blank staves and do the same, I get the clipped start to each measure, you can hardly hear the chord or anything really apart from a clipped noise, which is usually delayed a bit.

If I add 22 staves scrub playback is still OK - so it must be something to do with multiple staves and Finale not capable of reading the midi data fast enough to process. This never happened in previous versions, v.2014 was the all time best  for me! Seems we have gone backwards even though PCs and system softwares are better and faster.

Oh well...

I have found a solution to the problem. I need to reboot my USB midi connected sound module - then the scrub playback works well for all beats of the measure, plus it plays back all the staves.

Must be something to do with midi mapping when you update an older finale file to v25 or v26.

Voila.
