I am creating parts with no clef, key signature, or time signature.  I am hiding them using Edit Staff Attributes, and unchecking them in Items to Display. The notes or slash marks are then moved over to where those items would have been, which makes sense.  But is there a way leave the notes where they would have been had there been a clef, key signature and time signature?

Thanks!

I am not sure why you would want to do that, but in the Measure Attributes you can add Extra Space at the beginning of a measure.

Would that work for you?

The situation is that one page is a lead sheet with chord symbols and slash notation.  The other page has an alternate set of chords, positioned higher, with all other things hidden (staff lines, bar lines, etc) for a transparent overlay.  With the key/clef/time signature hidden, the chords won't line up correctly.

Thanks for your suggestion, I'll try it out!

Leon,

Create a new clef entry and use an empty character as a clef symbol (space bar?). Then, if the empty character isn't wide enough, you can add additional space to the right side of the clef in the "Clef" page of the document preferences dialog box.

At that point - use trial and error to adjust the "after" amount for the clef - clicking "apply" to see your changes.

Finale needs to think there is a clef in the score in order to apply any before/after clef spacing amounts.  If you hide the clef, there will not be any before/after space added. Using a blank character, or a "space" as the clef symbol, tells Finale there is a clef and to apply the before/after spacing.

If it is the beginning of the each system you are concerned about:

  1. Select the Page Layout Tool
  2. right-click a system handle
  3. Select "Space System Before/After Music..." (at the bottom)
  4. Enter the range: System [1] through [0] (this will affect all systems)
  5. Enter a value for "Extra Space At Beginning of System."
  6. Click OK.

Thanks Peter, George and Doug.  I'm trying all your solutions to see if I can get it right.  While working on this, the values in Edit Measure Attributes and in thepage layout tool for margins and spaces has changed from numeric values like 0 or 0.625 to 1p6 or 3p0.  Do you know what caused that change?

You can choose, what Measurement Units should be used in Finale’s dialog boxes.

The default choice is Inches, but layout calculations are easier if you choose small Measurement Units, like Points or EVPUs.

Values like 1p6 or 3p0 indicate the choice of Picas as Measurement Units.
