I have Finale 25, Windows 10, Pro-Tools 12.8. M Audio Hammer synth. Composer Cloud VI's in Protools.

I cannot currently write music in Finale using my Hammer 88. I hear no playback. I see no notes when playing then in the score form the Hammer 88.

I also have Pro-Tools on the machine. Since I have been using Finale separately, it seems to override Pro-Tools. Now it cannot find the Maudio MIDI setup anymore.

Question: What is the checklist, audio signal flow, MIDI channel set-up that I need to get going with both FInale and Pro-Tools on the same machine? What is the channel assignment? What else do I need? Is there a specific tutorial/tutorials that cover this? I have spent a lot of time in the manual, online videos etc.... this is taking a lot of time to resolve... I am hoping there is a learning module or someone who can get to the point quickly. I am at Berklee, a composer, we have a lot to do every day that uses both software.

I appreciate your interest and help. very much !

Finale 25 MIDI recognize my Hammer 88. It blocks MIDI from working in Pro-Tools for VST/VI's if open to gether or separately

Disclaimer up front: I do not use Pro Tools or the Hammer  88. I also realize you may already have tried all of these suggestions.

  1. You may find that Finale wants to use DirectSound  (MIDI/Audio > Device Setup > Audio Setup) while Pro Tools insists on ASIO. Also see if your drivers in either case are trying to grab sole control of your sound card.
  2. Also check in Device Setup > MIDI Setup to see what Finale expects for MIDI input and output devices.
  3. Check to make sure your cables are securely plugged in and that if you use the Hammer 88 MIDI-out (as opposed to the USB) that it is plugged into the MIDI-in on your MIDI interface. (Even experienced users have occasionally run into plug confusion.)
  4. I am guessing Rewire is not involved.

Hop you get this solved. I can imagine the frustration (as I have experienced similar).

HI Adrian. Thanks for getting back to me right away.

How can I find this... Also see if your drivers in either case are trying to grab sole control of your sound card.

Does it matter if the Finale setup wants Direct, ASIO and if Protools wants ASIO? Can they peacefully co-exist?

Is there a basic schematic I can follow for MIDI channel assignment for just a basic Piano Synth patch in Finale that doesnt conflict with Pro-Tools?

My Finale v25 works fine with DirectSound while Dorico & Cubase use an ASIO driver, but another program I am using constantly defaults to ASIO even though it needs DirectSound to play back.

If your driver can take exclusive control of your sound card (and that may depend on your sound card and its driver, you may need to go through your control panel to access the driver and tell it not to. If a driver were to grab sole control, nothing--including web sound, etc.--would work while the program that called it was running. Some Dorico users initially had problems hearing YouTube while Dorico was open until they learned how to turn off exclusive control.

If you are trying to send sound back out to your Hammer 88 (and you could not do this with a MIDI cable; perhaps you could with USB) you might need to rig up a Bidule connection, which is beyond my (knowledge) pay grade. :-)

Good afternoon everyone. I have been using finale since it’s inception. For playback I would use smart music and ambience for a good reality sound. You cn not do that in Finale 25. If I have a full orchestration like a symphony, how do I use Aria player and set it up for a full playback sound with reverb? How do I d0 this with Garritan Instant Orchestra also. Thanks f-r my and all assistance.

This is explained pretty well in the Help files. Also there are training videos. You should be able to access those links from within 25.
