First, my preference for staff and group names is to right-align them close to the staff, with the group names just far enough to the left of the staff names to make a single-staff group (eg, Tpt. 1) look right. But, taking the clarinets as an example...
My two clarinets' staff names are simply '1' and '2', with a group named 'Cl.' When the parts are on separate staves - or indeed if only one of them is showing - the group name is nicely positioned just to the left of the staff names. If I implode the two staves, I have a staff style which I apply to the first bar of the staff, to change the staff name to '1, 2'. Unfortunately, this means that the group name clashes with this longer staff name. I've tried various things, such as making a staff style to name the staff 'Cl. 1, 2'... but there's no option in a staff style to hide the group name (which makes sense, to be fair to Finale), so that's just a mess. I can't reposition the group name further left, or hide it, on a per-system or per-measure basis (or can I?), and if I reposition it globally it's out of alignment with the other groups.
Any suggestions for solutions or alternative approaches to this would be very welcome - I'm quite likely to be missing something blindingly obvious!
