I've been using Songwriter 2010 on a Windows XP laptop. I've learned for $200 I can upgrade to Finale v26 on my new MacBook Pro? Will Finale v26 be able to open my Windows XP Songwriter (.MUS) files on my MacBook Pro or will I need to first EXPORT the .MUS files as .MID and IMPORT them as .MID into Finale v26?

UPDATE: Answered my own question after the install of v26. it's an emphatic YES!. Cross platform from Windows XP to Mac Mojave. Pretty sweet!

Yes, you can open your 2010 .mus documents in Finale v26.

The file format in Finale has always been downwards compatible (= a newer program version can always open documents created in an older version).

The “old” .mus file format was never upwards compatible (= an older program version could not open documents created in a newer version).

On The Other Hand, the new .musx file format (introduced with Finale 2014) is upwards compatible (= Finale 2014 can open .musx documents created in later Finale versions).

Also, Finale 2014 and newer versions can export to the 2012 .mus “legacy” file format (but not to older .mus file formats like e. g. 2011 .mus or 2010 .mus).

When v26 opens a 2010 .mus document, it creates a new document in .musx format (= the original .mus document is not affected).
