Mac OS Mojave 10.14.3

Finale 25.5

So, I have the exact same piece of music in 2 files, both were in an earlier version. I THINK the one w out any suffix is a "newer" one, but at any rate they both look exactly the same when I open them now. Is there any advantage in keeping both?

I have to believe it is possible to find a MacOS date stamp in the properties option, but if you cannot tell them apart when you open them, I guess they are not both necessary. But given my past, I would save both under different names (one as a backup) just to be safe. Finale data files do not take up much disk space AFAIK.

If you've been using Finale since OS 9 or earlier, the likelihood is that the older file is the one without a suffix but not necessarily. In OS 9 and X, showing suffix names was optional in Preferences. Before that, they didn't exist. It's only an issue if you can't open the file.

In any case, if you're curious. run Get Info on the file to see when it was created.
