Hi all - I'm finding that the samples on CFX Concert Grand don't seem very consistent (?). I've attached a sample of the notes G4, A4, B4, and G4 again, played in succession, at velocity 127 using the Compact Classic Default preset on Windows 10 (although my experience is the same with the Compact Contemporary and Player Defaults as well). To me, the G4 has a percussive nature which I expect, but the A4 is unusually dull, and B4 is maybe intermediate. If I'm at a particularly climactic part of a song and I play an A4, it suddenly feels I've landed on a mute:

I've tested all velocity 127 samples spanning the keyboard range, and found when F3, F4 sound dull as well, especially when compared to E3 and E4, respectively.

Would not be surprised if I'm just doing/hearing something wrong, but help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hi Jason,

The samples for the CFX library were made from a specific CFX concert grand piano that Abbey Roads brought in for this project. Given the nature of acoustic instruments, it is possible that there may some differences in sound quality between different notes. Some may seem brighter while others more mellow and that's part of the character of the instrument.

Hi David,

Thanks for your response. Hmm, given that it seems I was hoping for a more percussive sound from specific notes as described above, is there a specific setting for hammer noise? Or perhaps, is switching to the player mic perspective just the most relevant thing to change?

Thanks again,

Jason
