Finale Printmusic 2014a running on Windows 10. Where can I find the Special Tools Tool? Is this not available on the 2014a version?

To change the shape of a notehead

  1. Choose the Special Tools tool , and click the measure in question.
  2. Choose the Note Shape Tool . A handle appears on each notehead.

You can’t. The quote you have posted is from the Finale manual, not PrintMusic. PM doesn’t have Special Tools.

 

There are a couple of workarounds. One is to download the demo version of Finale, and copy a couple of the templates. They will contain an X-notehead in the,Staff Styles. If you set up your doc starting with that template, you will then have the staff style.

 

The other way is more complicated. You can do it as a group of text inserts. Here is a link to a tutorial I did a few years back:
