MacOS 11 Beta (Big Sur), Finale 26.3.1.643

I've recently purchased Finale, VDL, as well as a VDL Template for Finale 2014 (the newest one on the site.) I've learned how to get the VDL sounds working and all by watching the Demystified videos on youtube, and every VDL instrument I've tried in Finale works flawlessly. Except for the battery instruments. I've attached a screen recording of an example of the problem I'm having. Essentially, none of the sounds match up to what they say they should. I'm really not sure if this is a template issue, a VDL issue, or a Finale issue, but I'm really hoping that someone here can help me out or point me to somewhere I can get the help I need, because I really want to get around to actually writing music.

Connor,

There is a VDL Facebook group, Tapspace Forum, and The Write Score forum for Finale users. That being said, I've watched the video and I'm not certain what the exact issue is that you're encountering.

Now, it is important to know that all of the VDL non-pitched percussion instruments (or for that matter any non-pitched percussion instrument used in Finale) requires that a Percussion MIDI Map be assigned to for that instrument. In the case of the full version of VDL and the Finale templates from The Write Score, these are the XML files you would have copied to the MIDI Device Annotation folder.

The Percussion MIDI Maps are assigned through the Score Manager. The column is on the far right of the upper section. If it is not visible then click the Customize View button for a drop down list of options and select Perc MIDI Maps.

Finally, just to be clear, it looks as though you are using the latest version of Finale with a beta version for the next Mac OS. As Mike noted above, VDL requires Kontakt, either the full version or Kontakt Player. The current version of Kontakt is Kontakt 6. Make sure you have installed this 64-bit version.

If you have additional questions or need further help, I follow all three of the forums mentioned above and check them every day to provide assistance to Finale/VDL and The Write Score template users, as well as Finale percussion challenges.

It looks like Ted is on the case here—hope you get it working.

Of course, MakeMusic, like most companies, never supports OS Beta. In addition, NI has a history of being behind the curve when it comes so supporting major Mac OS updates — not unusual for them to be compatible till months after the official release date. It could be that simple but we won't know till you report back so please do. This will help everybody.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the responses, it turned out to be the MIDI Percussion Map being hidden in the Instrument List in the Score Manager. I just didn't know you could toggle it on and off

Thank you again!
