I got the Roland A49 midi controller. Hooked it up and it works fine with Finale 27. However, the problem. I am not that great of a keyboard player as I found that out quickly. Believe me! So, how do others use their midi keyboards with Finale?

Using Speedy Entry for input not all that great either. It seems to me, while it does work, the computer number keypad is on the right side which make me use my left hand on the midi controller. Maybe just feels awkward at first and I would get used to it?

Any tips?

I use step entry in Speedy Entry with my left hand on the numeric keypad and my right hand on my Yamaha DX7.

Hyperscribe is difficult unless one is a very capable player, and because of the layers involved in keyboard music, Hyperscribe is likely least effective for entering keyboard instruments.

"Hyperscribe is difficult ..."

It only took a few seconds to find that out! My current set up is with my Roland digital piano on my left. I guess I can switch or just put the A49 on the right side and leave the other Roland where it is. But right now I use Speedy and my right hand does the number pad.

I just check chords on the Roland. It just seems awkward to change after all these years. Maybe not possible for me at this point.

I use Simple Entry, with my full QWERTY keyboard.

Unless you're an accomplished keyboard player (which I’m emphatically not) I don’t understand why many people feel that Speedy is better than Simple. You select the note, and enter the duration. I select the duration, and enter the note. In Speedy, with a MIDI keyboard, you can enter a chord all at once, which is certainly a plus. (But you have to pay attention to accidentals in the key signature.) And you can “noodle” in Speedy, which is certainly an advantage for a composer.

I’m not claiming that one is better than the other. I suspect that the one you learned first is the one you stick with, and that’s fine. And switching from one to the other requires unlearning and relearning, which is a PITA. But for my (primarily) copyist single-line note entry, I don’t need a digital keyboard taking up space.

I find I use both Simple and Speedy entry, depending on need. I am glad both exist.

" I am glad both exist."

So am I, and so do I, but the midi controller keyboard would just be another way to input chords. Plus you can hear them as they enter.
