When I want to transfer a MIDI drum set track from Digital Performer to Finale, I do the following:

 

  • Clean up the drum notes in DP, making sure they correspond to the standard MIDI spec for drum parts (C1 is BD, D1 is snare, etc.—with C3 as middle C).
  • Export the track as a MIDI file.
  • Drag it onto the Finale icon.
  • In the ensuing dialogues, I assign clef and notation style (drum clef and "drum set" notation style).
  • Hit OK a few times, and...
  •  

Voilà! Drum notation. Except... not in 27. In 27, question marks come up instead of the note heads. I kept 26 on my hard drive—my process still works with 26, so I'm not panicking. But I know the font implementation has changed—can someone explain how to do this successfully in 27? (FYI once I've successfully imported the drum set MIDI file into Finale 26 in drum notation format, it opens fine in Finale 27).

First, do they play back correctly? If so the problem is that the font is incorrect; perhaps you are using a Finale 27 file designed to work with SMuFL rather than the former Maestro/Copyist font standard and the routine that matches the percussion notes to font symbols has not been updated.

 

If you have not already sent your file to MakeMusic using the "Submit a request" link at the top of this page, you should do so, both so they can help solve your situation and so they will realize they need to update the mapping routine.

Thanks for the quick reply! It's definitely a font thing. I'll look into it more tomorrow, and I'll send the file to MakeMusic as well. But to clarify: All I did was drag the SMF onto the Finale 27 icon and stepped through the dialogues that Finale put in front of me. I wasn't joining it to any pre-existing file at that stage. When I did this procedure with Finale 26, the note heads were normal; when I did it in 27, they weren't. Same SMF. I'm sure it can be fixed, but I need to do some research to figure out how. (Unless you have a suggestion of what I should try, which would be welcome!)
