I'm running Finale 26 on Windows 10. Previously I posted a question regarding MIDI files not playing on my keyboard. Files seem to upload and seem to "play" as the metronome light blinks for the tempo but there is no sound. I created a test song in Finale 2008, saved as a MIDI file, uploaded onto a thumb drive to the keyboard and the song played just fine. Is there such a thing as a newer software program (Finale 26) using a newer MIDI code/protocol that an older keyboard cannot recognize? Further, is there a way to covert a file created in Finale 26 to Finale 2008? 26 uses .musx but 2008 uses .mus. Additionally, how do I convert a MIDI file created in 26 back to a Finale file in 2008?

Finale went to .musx in 2012. Current versions can save back to that but not earlier. There is a workaround, however. You can export as MusicXML — probably 1., 1.1 or 2, you’ll have to experiment. Use the .xml extension. Open that file in 2008 and save that to your drive.

 

2008 has some .xml functionality but I don’t recall how much. I don’t know if an older Dolet plugin can add additional MusicXML functionality to 2008. Someone else may know and be able to turn you onto it. I remember Dolet 6 adding v.3.0 to Finale 2009.

You might also try a MIDI export from 26 / import to 2008.

How about printing a good PDF? Because, I believe 2008 still had the scan feature. Since this is a keyboard piece perhaps 2008 can read the scan and convert it. In any event, any mildly successful option is going to require some editing.

Hmmmm, with MusicXML and MIDI export/import both available, it would never occur to me to recommend SmartScore Lite as the solution. Not saying don't try it but I can't believe for a second that it would be better than either of the others.
