Since I've more or less been talked into needing to try it, and I am getting acquainted with NP3, I thought I better start a new thread.
Sounds good in general, but some things elude me so far (not much specific info to find in the documentation ...)

1) I don't seem to be able to keep different groups of NP instruments assigned to separate banks. I can do it in the score manager, but then when I run Reassign Playback Sounds everything goes back to Bank 1. Does NP always insist on filling up a bank untl all 16 channels are used?

2) I have also created a separate bank for some sounds I want to use with the ARIA player, but when I Reassign, then that goes also back to NP on Bank 1.

3) I assume it's because of this MIDI feature of percussion having to be on channel 10 - I have a vibraphone on ch.15, but the marimba doesn't want to be on ch.16, it always turns up on ch.10 (changing the score layout.in the Mixer) - it' confusing.

4) And here the problem (or ignorance, as it may be) that made me discard NP last time I tried. All eigth notes (particularly brass) are played more or less staccato. How can one achieve a more tenuto or legato phrasing?
P.S.: later ... it seems it can only be done by applying slurs (expressions don't seem to), which works fine, but that's usually something I don't apply until the very end, when finishing a score and parts.

You probably need to d/l the NP3 manual. But I make a separate sound file and put each instrument on its own staff.

I have the manual, but it doesn't answer my questions ...

I see no point in making a sound file when I am editing the notation of a score. That would be the very last thing to do with a finished score.

Yes I know but that is how I do it. That procedure may or may not work for you. I just got through with an arrangement of the Ukrainian Prayer. I don't like how NP3 works while composing or arranging. I do some minor tweaks after the arrangement is complete and I hear it with NP3.

That's pretty much what I do (except I usually go to a DAW in the end - still more control perhaps)

Michael,

When you select Reassign Playback Sounds, Finale will reset any manual changes you have made to your Banks and Channel setup. Starting at the first staff, it will assign the most appropriate instrument available (based on your Sound Map Priority order and the staff name) to the first channel in the first bank, and proceed in order from there.

So, the behavior you are seeing with that function is correct. Why are choosing to do this after you have already setup the document sounds the way you would like them to be?

Because the documentation told me so (I thought) ....

But It worked fine changing the bank and instruments in the score manager and just go to playback (WITHOUT reassigning sounds). However, when I then went and changed another couple of instruments to a different bank, although the sounds seem to be correctly playing and the bank shows in the VST Banks & Effects window, when opening the NP mixer for that bank it shows nothing and does not populate when playing back. Any explanation for that? (this may of course be more of an NP problem than Finale)

Some of the NP sounds are definitely played more strongly and accentuated. There is a way to change that using CC but I found the results were not great.

In the Human Playback settings, add to "Sustaining: Standard" and add to Action 2 Controller/108/1.

Thanks. Yeah, a little better, but, like you said, not great ...

Perhaps this question would be better served by the Noteperformer 3 tech staff. It appears more of a NP3 issue than Finale.
