I am working on a big band piano part where I need to remove the bass clef piano line of the part. I also will need to bring it back in, later in the part. In fact, I need to make this change in the piano part several times for this piano part. There are big sections of just chord changes and some smaller areas of where the Grand Staff is needed for a few measures.

I know how to eliminate the bass line for the entire arrangement, but I'm a little puzzled about bringing the Grand Staff in and out of the piano part, numerous times.

Thanks for you always-great assistance!

I am running a desktop Windows 10 PC running Finale 27.2.0.144

Have you tried creating the piano part as two separate staves and then grouping them together but only showing the lower staff when needed?

Have you tried using a staff style to show and hide systems of music?

Denver Seifried,

There is nothing wrong about hiding one staff of a Grand Staff.

But it is a little “non-standard”, and the Finale default for a Grand Staff is to, not allow {hiding one of the two staves}.

With the Staff Tool you can hide a staff “locally”, but you must first make one change in the Group Attributes for the staff group of the Grand Staff:

You have all been very helpful. I have been working with the Staff Tool to eliminate the bass clef staff. Now I am not sure how to go about adding the bass clef back, as I have made a couple of mistakes and elimated the treble clef staff, by mistake.

How do I restore my mistake? It's been too long and I cannot use Edit and restore it.

Thanks, again, for your help.

Denver Seifried,

As a first step, switch to Scroll View.

1) If the staff is missing from Scroll View, then you have deleted it (probably).

If you can not Undo the staff deletion, then you will have to insert a new staff.

2) If the staff is present in Scroll View (as I suspect), then it has just been hidden from Page View.

To get the staff back in Page View, remove the staff style that hides the staff (in case the staff was hidden with a staff style).

Or, switch back to Page View, and use the Staff Tool’s Staff menu to Show Empty Staves (you must select a region first).

Did you backup your file before you made a major change like removing a staff? If so, you can go back and copy/paste what you need into your current version.

(I tend to save a lot of older versions, changing the date-stamp ending of my file name before saving as a new version. Finale files are not all that large for average size works.)

All of you have been such a great help in assisting me with this piano part. I was able to go into scroll view and fix all of my issues I had created. It was easy to fix problems, once I got into scroll view of that piano part. I also needed to make some of the cued notation in the part into reduced size noteheads. I did figure out I needed to work on the reductions on the score. I couldn't get the drop-down menu to let me get to noteheads, without going to score view. Worked great!

Thanks!
