Macbook Pro 2021 M1 Chip

Mac OS Monterey 12.4

Finale v27

Using a MIDI keyboard for note entry.

I purchased this macbook pro about 3 weeks ago, and I downloaded my Finale v26. I had playback problems using garritan instruments where the sound would cut out in the middle of note entry AND playback. I would be left with a single instrument.

Over the course of the sluggish correspondence with customer service, I received a work-around to reassign the playback sounds whenever this happened. I found I could also switch to MIDI sounds. These each worked for a few minutes at a time.

Finding this to be disruptive to my workflow, I thought upgrading to v27 might fix the issue. Now that I've installed v27, I am not getting access to any of my garritan sounds. Do any of you have some guidance you could offer me?

I've reinstalled my aria player. I've reinstalled all my garritan packages.

I know my MIDI keyboard is sending signal to the computer just fine. I can still enter notes in Finale with the keyboard controller, but there is no playback sound.

Nothing I've tried has worked. Nothing the customer service reps have suggested has fixed my issue either. I've gotten no suggestions from the Finale 101 facebook group either.

Is Garritan Aria compatible with the M1 Macs? Have you tried running the software thought Rosetta?

Thank you for your guidance!

I double - checked ARIA player, and it is a universal application. According to my google search, that means it should run on M1 chip no problem.

Old Smoothies and Thomas.

On Old Smoothies, everything works fine. The voice line triggers the GPO5 voice playback, and the marimba lines triggers marimba.  I can listen to the song from start to finish without playback stopping. I can enter notes, and the appropriate Garritan instrument is triggered with my MIDI keyboard.

On Thomas (a large percussion ensemble), I only get playback from the snare drum line. None of the other instruments trigger their respective Garritan instruments.

I've tried opening several new documents to test out playback. In each case, it matters not which instruments I choose in score manager. I only get sound from the top line, and the sound is a concert piano sound. This happens despite the correct instrument displaying in the score manager dialog box.

I hear only piano on the top line for note entry, and there is no sound on the lower lines.

I can get sound to work if I play through MIDI units.

The garritan instrument package wasn't cheap, so I hate to just use play through MIDI units. Also, I need to make an audio version of my file for the competition I'm entering. So, I would like to figure out the problem with garritan instruments soon. Additionally, Garritan sounds are much easier to work with for me.

Thank you for diving into this with me!

If you take a copy of Thomas, tell it to use VST playback in the MIDI/Audio menu, and then instruct it to "Reassign Playback Sounds," do you get playable sounds? What does your Score Manager look like? (Can you include an image of the Score Manager?)

I don't see VST playback as an option in the dropdown menu.

Here's an image of my score manager.

Here's an image of the drop down menu MIDI/Audio. Where do I find the setting to use VST playback?

When I assign MIDI/Audio to play through Audio Units and Reassign playback sounds, I get no sound at all.

I do get sound when I select play Finale through MIDI.

Did I test the function you were asking for with VST? I think that means Audio Units?

OK! Problem solved.

Thank you!

I looked closer at Rosetta recommendations for Finale/Aria. It recommended running Finale with Rosetta even though it's a universal application. I set it to open with Rosetta, and the Garritan sounds all work with playback and note entry now!

Thank you for your guidance!

My mistake about the VST reference; I should have remembered that Macs use Audio Units. Glad you got your sounds back.
