Windows 11, current Finale (v.27)

So, I am finishing a work for solo violin and piano.

In a few places I have cresc & decresc markings (hairpins) for the violin only.

When I place the markings above the violin staff, they affect only the violin.

When I place the markings below the violin staff, they affect the violin AND the piano.

When I grab the markings with my mouse I can see the little dotted lines indicating they are attached to the violin part--at least that is what I think they mean. (The little lines are attached to the violin part when above and when below the violin staff.)

Help?

Thank you,
:-)

Was this file created in Finale or imported via XML or MIDI?

Hi Adrian,

It was completely created in Finale, all in the past two months.

… When I place the markings above the violin staff, they affect only the violin.

When I place the markings below the violin staff, they affect the violin AND the piano …

Something to try:

Place the marking above the violin staff. Now the marking affects only the violin - right?

Do not place another marking below the staff. Instead, grab the marking above the staff, and drag it down.

Does the marking still affect only the violin staff (and not the piano)?

Thank you, Peter

When I double-click above the violin staff to insert an Expression, it still appears below the staff.

However, oddly enough, it does work. :-)
Odd, indeed.
See follow-up, below.

Hi Peter,

A little background on this piece.

I wanted to have separate control over each staff in the piano part. Sometimes I do this to use a different piano sound on each staff.

When I create two separate staves and then assign piano instrumentation to each, they each become piano parts with two staves each.
Then, I delete the bass staff on the upper one, and the treble on the lower one and "Group" them.
This leaves me with the appearance of a piano part, but control over each--including separate dynamics.

If I create two grand staves I get what appears to be a piano part, but actually are two separate staves "Grouped" together.
IF I then assign piano instrument to each, each becomes a two-staff piano part.

I think this might be a clue to what happened with the dynamics? Perhaps?
Just fishing now, to try to figure out what happened.

Sometimes, after all the above, I wish to convert the separate piano staves into a single piano part (with two staves as an actual piano instrumentation, and not just grouped).
Do you have an idea how to do this?

Hope this is not too confusing. ;-)

Vanessa,

Open the Finale document, and take a good look here:

Window menu > ScoreManager > Instrument List

1) In the column Name you can expand the Piano’s Grand Staff by clicking on the arrow >.

Doing so will display each of the two staves in the Grand Staff.

2) In the right side of the Instrument List you can see, to which Channel each staff is assigned.

Staves that are assigned to the same Channel, are “mutually dependent” in Playback.

Staves that are assigned to different Channels, are “mutually independent” in Playback, so that they can have separate dynamics.

3) You could e. g. assign the Violin staff to Channel 1, the Piano’s upper staff to Channel 2, and the Piano’s lower staff to Channel 3.

Hi Peter,

Yes, in Score Manager each of the staves has its own channel:

Even with “a single piano part” (= your own words) you can put the two Piano staves on separate Channels.

Then the two Piano staves will play with the same Piano sound, but with “independent dynamics” playback.

From your screen shot I can see that you are playing Finale through VST.

You could also try playing Finale through MIDI, and check whether you get the same “dependent staves” problem there.

However, Garritan is “VST only”.

If you play Finale through MIDI, you can try the SmartMusic SoftSynth.

Vanessa,

If you set each to a different channel and then look at the Mixer you should see something like this.

Finale default piano. Both sliders move together.

If each has its own bank you should see this. Sliders can move independently of each other.

That should let you set sound where you want it for each  staff.

Hi Peter,

Yes, I did know that. The problem is--and it seems to happen rarely--the "Expressions" are affecting the next staff (treble clef piano) down when they are placed below the violin part, but are fixed to only the violin part when placed above it.

Interestingly, I ran the file through Perfect Layout (I just got it and am not yet familiar with it) and PL corrected the problem.

Really odd, though.

I appreciate your feedback and suggestions.

Hi Ernie,

Yes, that is part of the reason for separating the piano part.

-- to be able to assign a different piano for each staff
-- to be able to assign separate dynamics and expressions to each staff
-- to be able to control each staff independently with via the Mixer sliders.

Still don't know why or how the violin Expressions affect the piano part below it, in this particular file.

Thanks!
:-)

Can you send me a portion of the file? Just a part where you see this happening.

How do you like PL? I am not sure why PL would fix a sound issue but Jan is an amazing talent so who knows?
