If you want it in chord, like A°, you can type the A and then the o (letter o.) For a half diminished, option-o.

The problem is that the piece you are copying is incorrect! If you want 6 beats to play back in the space of 4, you need to show all six beats in the score. Make those quarter notes on beats 2, 3, ...
Excellent! We’re always happy when it turns out to be so simple of a fix! Remember that, when you want to extend a slur over multiple notes: double click and drag, as far as you need to go.
Have you used other versions of Finale in the past, so you know how the tools work? Is this a new installation? Did it ever work properly? Have you restarted the computer? Or trashed the preference...
