Have you selected Manual Positioning > Incorporate in Document Options > Music spacing? Have you DEselected Automatic Music Spacing in Program Options > Edit?

Yes. The student version is fully functional. There should be no problem opening your 2012 projects, and resaving them in the new format. I would suggest you download the demo, and try for yourself...
