I'm not sure what you mean. You can notate a single staff, easily. Just start with the default document, and change it to whatever instrument you want in the Score Manager.

PM will certainly do a lot more than NotePad. I'd suggest you download the demo, and try it out for a month. If it does everything you need it to do, great. If not, then worry about going to Finale...

What app are you trying to open it, in? I would send that directly to tech support.

If you're on a Mac, try setting it up as a keyboard shortcut, in System Preferences>keyboard

You can do it on a system-by-system basis with the Staff tool, and "hide empty staves." This means that you have to set up your score so that the empty measures span a full system.

Do you have the "to coda" set to the proper measure number and pass?
