I have not heard of such a limitation but you are unclear on some of the details. if you export an hour long file, does it cut off at 36 minutes, too? Does the export show done or does it hang?...
One needs to know both methods. There are some web sites where i post that only the two or three key method works to create such characters while, with others, only holding the key is successful.

What other apps have you opened that access the sound card? In Windows, this is the usual culprit. Does it return to normal once you reboot?
