The symbol can be created as a chord suffix, too. Just don't forget to uncheck the display of "Root". The advantage of using a chord suffix is that it aligns on the baseline of the existing chords....

This kind of task is easy to do (even per layer) with a plug-in : JW Tools -> JW Change -> Noteheads -> Shape (+ select a layer). Try it and see if it performs better.

Have you tried this : instead of using the Pickup Measure command in the Document menu, define the pickup measure as a "shorter" measure via the signature tool (ex. : 2/4, but displayed as 4/4).
